Being prepared to run into several con men and pickpockets during your travels is an important thing to consider before departing on any type of vacation. Americans are targeted more than anyone while traveling abroad, so it is always a good idea to learn what to look out for before heading off to any destination. Most commonly thieves target young, inexperienced travelers, like college students backpacking through Europe. To help you avoid being targeted, we’ve put together a few tips to help you keep your money and your belongings to yourself.

1.) Money Belt – This is by far one of the most handy travel accessories you can ever buy. They are cheap, highly useful, and will provide you with the best protection against any dexterous pickpocket. A money belt is a small zippered fabric pouch that you wear around your waste but below your clothing and in one of the most inconspicuous places you can. Keep all of your cash, credit cards, and travel documents safe and secure in a money belt and you’ll thwart 90% of the risk of being taken while you’re traveling through Europe.

2.) Blend In – Another great way to avoid being spotted by thieves is to blend in as much as you can with the people surrounding you. Ask to see a police officers badge before giving anything out. People backpacking in Italy, often run into this one, so be especially wary in places like Venice, Pompeii, and even Rome.

These 3 tips alone will go a long way to preventing theft and other dangerous things while traveling abroad. There is always that small chance that you’ll be gotten, but that risk goes with just about anything in life. Practice common sense and keep your wits about you, and you shouldn’t have any problems. In the unfortunate event that you do have something stolen, make sure to immediately call the police and file a report.
