The Mercury Dime, a 10 cent coin minted from 1916 to 1945 in Philadelphia, San Francisco and Denver, is also known as the Winged Liberty Head Dime. It succeeded the Barber dime which was circulated for 25 years. The Mercury Dime was also succeeded by Franklin D. Roosevelt dime in 1946 to respect the president for supporting the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. It is also known as the March of Dimes.

A German immigrant, Adolph Weinman, is the sculptor who won the commission to design the Mercury dime. It is highly acknowledged by collectors as the most wonderful coin made in the United States Mint.

The obverse side of the coins details the mythical goddess Liberty with a Phrygian winged cap which illustrates liberty and freedom. It is based on Elsie Stevens’ bust, the wife of poet Wallace Stevens. The word “Liberty” encircled the goddess’ head with phrase “In God We Trust” at the bottom of the coin. Its reverse features Roman fasces and an olive branch that represents a readiness for a battle but desires for peace.

The bust of Elsie Stevens, which was used by Adolph Weinman to design the coin, was lost to history after Stevens’ daughter rejected the gift from her mother.

“Mercury” is an assumed title, but the coin does not outline the Mercury. The Liberty wearing a winged cap represents freedom of thought.

Mercury Dime is valued at one-tenth of a U.S. Dollar which is 90 percent silver and 10 percent copper. At the same time, it promotes liberty through strength. It is the smallest coin issued by the United States Mint, which measures 17.9 millimeters in diameter and weighs 2.50 grams.

The first mintage of this dime was only 264,000. That makes it greatly desired by collectors. Other Mercury dimes contain blemishes that blew up their value like the over date stamp from the Philadelphia die of 1942 into 1941.
